What is Intelligent Transportation Systems?
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is an umbrella term for various technologies used to monitor transportation system usage and improve performance. Examples of applied technologies in the region include:
- vehicle counting devices (or loop detectors);
- electronic message signs that relay upcoming road conditions; and
- closed-circuit traffic cameras used to monitor traffic flow.
These technologies can help us understand the amount of traffic volume on a roadway, number of vehicles going through an intersection, or where speeds are reduced significantly due to congestion. Transportation engineers and planners can use this information to improve our roadways and make them more efficient. These applications are being used all over the country to get us to our destinations efficiently and safely.
